Governor Newsom Calls Texas Governor Abbott “Reckless” For Changing His State’s COVID Rules Instead of Just Violating Them

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA – On Tuesday last week, California Governor Gavin Newsome criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott for eliminating Texas’ COVID restrictions and the mandate to wear masks.

“That’s absolutely reckless”, said Newsom. “If he personally wanted to dine out with friends without wearing a mask, he should not have changed his state’s rules. He should have just violated them.”

“I mean, come on. Rules are for ‘little people’. Not for state governors.”

“In California, our politicians know how to be privileged. Look at San Francisco Mayor London Breed, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, LA Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Nancy Pelosi...and even myself. We all know that ‘Rules are for thee, but not for me’.”

Newsom stated that if a politician is caught being hypocritical, it’s easy to talk your way out of it.

“Just start by saying it was an ‘honest mistake’. Then go about explaining why it really wasn’t a mistake after all: Say things like ‘The event had already been scheduled’, ‘We all had been recently tested’, and ‘We were still social distancing’.”

“Or use the old stand-by, 'It’s important that I continue to represent the state, and conduct the state’s business.'”

“Look at Governor Cuomo: He blasted Justice Kavanaugh over sexual harassment allegations, and Trump over poor handling of COVID. And then we find out he himself harassed 5 different women, and his handling of COVID killed 16,000 people. Now Cuomo is giving a master class in how to talk his way out of a situation.”

“So for God’s sake, don’t start following your own rules. If people see one politician is following their own rules, they’ll start expecting the rest of us politicians to follow ours. We just can’t have that.”
